What Is ACCA?

The Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) is the world's largest and fastest-growing professional accounting body, with over 252,500 members and 526,000+ students across 180+ countries. Founded in 1904 in the UK, ACCA provides a globally portable accounting qualification that opens doors to careers in audit, tax, management accounting, financial management, and corporate finance worldwide.

The ACCA qualification consists of 13 exams across three progressive levels — Applied Knowledge, Applied Skills, and Strategic Professional — plus an Ethics and Professional Skills module and 3 years of practical experience (PER). Unlike many professional qualifications, ACCA has no degree requirement to start — making it accessible to school leavers, career changers, and international students who may not have traditional university pathways.

ACCA members can use the designatory letters "ACCA" after their name and are recognised as Chartered Certified Accountants. The qualification is recognised by employers globally and has mutual recognition agreements with professional bodies in dozens of countries — making it one of the most portable accounting qualifications in the world.

Applied Knowledge (3 Exams)

The entry level of ACCA — these three papers cover the fundamentals of business, management accounting, and financial accounting. They are available as on-demand computer-based exams (CBE) at any Pearson VUE test centre worldwide, meaning you can book and sit them at any time (no fixed exam windows).

Applied Skills (6 Exams)

The intermediate level tests application of technical knowledge to practical scenarios. These papers are sat during the 4 fixed exam windows (March, June, September, December) and are more demanding — requiring both technical calculations and professional judgement.

The final level consists of 2 essential (compulsory) papers and 2 optional papers (chosen from 4 options). These test senior-level professional skills — strategic thinking, leadership, communication, and advanced technical expertise. The Strategic Business Leader (SBL) paper is unique in format: a 4-hour integrated case study requiring real-world decision-making.

Oxford Brookes BSc (Hons): ACCA students who pass the first 9 papers (Applied Knowledge + Applied Skills) can simultaneously earn a BSc (Hons) in Applied Accounting from Oxford Brookes University by completing a Research and Analysis Project (RAP). This is a unique benefit — you can earn a UK degree alongside your professional qualification without attending university. The RAP must be submitted before passing all 13 papers.

Exemptions & Pathways

Exemption Pathways: Degree holders in accounting, finance, or business can receive exemptions from up to 9 papers (all of Applied Knowledge + all of Applied Skills). The exact exemptions depend on your university, country, and course content. Common scenarios:
  • Accounting/Finance degree (UK/Commonwealth): Typically 7–9 exemptions → start at Strategic Professional
  • Business degree (non-accounting): Typically 3–5 exemptions → start mid-Applied Skills
  • No degree / school leaver: No exemptions → start from BT (Applied Knowledge)
  • CAT (Certified Accounting Technician): Exemptions from Applied Knowledge papers
  • Other professional qualifications (CIMA, CPA, etc.): Varies — check ACCA's exemption calculator

Verdict: Choose ACCA if you want maximum international portability, flexibility to study independently, or plan to work outside the UK. Choose CIMA if your career is firmly in corporate/industry finance (budgeting, forecasting, strategic planning). Choose ACA if you have a Big 4 training contract in the UK or plan to stay in UK practice. All three lead to "Chartered Accountant" status — the difference is in career focus and geographic strength.

Tips & Exam Strategy

Critical Tips for ACCA Success:
  • Exam order strategy matters: You have flexibility in the order you take Applied Skills papers. The recommended sequence: do FR (Financial Reporting) before SBR — SBR builds directly on FR knowledge. Do PM (Performance Management) before APM — same progression logic. Do TX before ATX, and AA before AAA. This "vertical" study approach builds knowledge incrementally.
  • Pass Applied Knowledge papers quickly: BT, MA, and FA are available on-demand and have high pass rates (72–85%). Don't spend months on these — aim to clear all three within your first 2–3 months. They are foundational but not difficult for anyone with basic numeracy and business sense. Use them to build study momentum.
  • Strategic Business Leader (SBL) is unique: SBL is a 4-hour integrated case study — unlike any other ACCA paper. It tests professional skills (communication, analysis, scepticism, evaluation) as much as technical knowledge. You're essentially acting as a board-level advisor. Practice with past SBL cases extensively. Focus on report structure, recommendations quality, and professional judgement — not just technical accuracy.
  • Time management in 3-hour papers: Applied Skills and Strategic Professional papers are 3–3.5 hours with multiple questions of varying marks. The universal rule: allocate time proportionally to marks. A 20-mark question gets ~36 minutes in a 3-hour paper. NEVER spend 60 minutes on a 20-mark question while leaving a 25-mark question unfinished.
  • Attempt ALL questions: ACCA exams are 50% pass mark with no negative marking. Even if you're unsure, write something for every requirement. Markers award marks for valid points — even partial answers can earn 3–5 marks out of 10. An unanswered question is guaranteed 0 marks.
  • Use ACCA's free resources: ACCA provides free technical articles, past exam papers, examiner reports, and study guides on their website. The examiner reports are gold — they explicitly state what candidates did wrong and what would have earned marks. Read the most recent 4 examiner reports for every paper you're sitting.
  • Practice under exam conditions: Especially for Strategic Professional papers, do at least 3 full practice papers under strict time conditions before each sitting. Many students fail not because they don't know the material, but because they run out of time or don't allocate time properly across questions.
  • Don't neglect Ethics: The Ethics and Professional Skills module is a separate online module (no exam) that must be completed before you can qualify. It takes ~20 hours. Complete it alongside your Applied Skills papers — don't leave it until the end as it adds unnecessary delay to your qualification date.
Exam Order Flexibility: Within each level, you can take papers in any order. Across levels, you must complete (or be exempt from) the lower level before starting the next. You can take a maximum of 4 papers per sitting. Strategic tip: many students combine 2 Applied Skills papers + 1 Strategic Professional paper per sitting once they're eligible for both levels — this accelerates completion significantly.
