Picture yourself at a new job. On your first day, you notice that everyone eats lunch at exactly 12:30, so you do the same. Nobody told you to — you simply adjusted your behavior to match the group. This seemingly trivial act illustrates one of social psychology's most studied phenomena: conformity — changing one's behavior or beliefs to match the responses of others.
Conformity is not inherently good or bad. It greases the wheels of society, enabling cooperation, shared expectations, and social cohesion. Without it, traffic rules, queuing systems, and workplace norms would collapse. Yet conformity also enables destructive outcomes — from fashion-driven eating disorders to the silent complicity of bystanders witnessing injustice.
Types of Conformity
Harvard psychologist Herbert Kelman (1958) identified three distinct levels of conformity, each differing in depth and motivation:

Public Compliance vs. Private Acceptance
A crucial distinction in conformity research is between public compliance (going along outwardly while privately disagreeing) and private acceptance (genuinely changing one's mind). When Asch's participants gave wrong answers, most knew the answer was wrong — they complied publicly but didn't accept privately. In contrast, when people use informational influence in ambiguous situations, they often genuinely change their beliefs.
Conversion represents the deepest form of influence — when a minority position gradually changes the majority's private beliefs over time. Unlike compliance, conversion involves genuine cognitive restructuring, not merely going along to get along. This process, studied extensively by Serge Moscovici, explains how social movements and scientific revolutions eventually shift public opinion.

Normative Influence
Normative influence is the desire to be liked and accepted by others. It drives conformity through the implicit threat of social rejection, ridicule, or exclusion. We conform not because we believe the group is right, but because we fear the consequences of being different.
Deutsch and Gerard (1955) formally distinguished normative from informational influence in a landmark paper. They demonstrated that even when people knew an answer was wrong, they would still publicly conform if they believed group members could identify them. When responses were anonymous, conformity dropped dramatically — proving that the motivation was social acceptance, not genuine belief change.
Fear of Rejection & Belonging
The power of normative influence is rooted in our fundamental need to belong (Baumeister & Leary, 1995). Throughout human evolutionary history, social exclusion was literally a death sentence — isolated individuals couldn't hunt, defend against predators, or reproduce effectively. Our brains evolved to treat social rejection as a threat to survival, activating the same neural pain circuits as physical injury.
Social Norms: Injunctive vs. Descriptive
Social norms — the unwritten rules governing behavior — come in two distinct varieties:
- Injunctive norms: What people ought to do (approved/disapproved behavior). Example: "You should recycle." These carry moral weight and are enforced through social sanctions.
- Descriptive norms: What people actually do (observed behavior). Example: "Most people in this neighborhood recycle." These serve as information about effective or appropriate behavior.
Cialdini et al. (1990) demonstrated that these norms can work in opposite directions. In a littering study, making descriptive norms salient ("look at all this litter — everyone litters here") actually increased littering. But making injunctive norms salient ("littering is wrong") decreased it. The lesson: highlighting what people actually do (especially bad behavior) can backfire by normalizing it.
Informational Influence
Informational influence is the desire to be correct. When situations are ambiguous, novel, or complex, we look to others as sources of information about reality. If everyone at a restaurant orders the fish, you might assume they know something you don't — perhaps the fish is particularly fresh today. This is rational behavior: other people are legitimate sources of information.
Unlike normative influence (which produces mere public compliance), informational influence often produces private acceptance — genuine belief change. When you adopt a group's answer because you believe they're right, you've internalized their position.
Sherif's Autokinetic Effect Study (1935)
The Autokinetic Effect — Conformity Through Uncertainty
The Setup: Sherif placed participants in a completely dark room and showed them a single, stationary point of light. Due to a perceptual illusion called the autokinetic effect, the light appears to move (because your eyes have no stable reference point). Participants were asked to estimate how far the light "moved."
Phase 1 (Individual): When tested alone, each participant developed their own stable personal norm — one person might consistently say "2 inches," another "6 inches." There was no objectively correct answer.
Phase 2 (Group): Participants were then placed in groups of three and asked to state their estimates aloud. Over multiple trials, their answers converged toward a common group norm. A person who previously said "6 inches" and a person who said "2 inches" would both shift toward "4 inches."
Phase 3 (Individual Again): When participants were later tested alone again, they maintained the group norm — proving this was internalization, not mere compliance.
Why It Matters: Sherif demonstrated that in ambiguous situations, people use others' judgments as legitimate information. The resulting conformity is deep (private acceptance) and lasting. This explains how group consensus forms on subjective matters — from workplace culture to political opinions — where no objectively correct answer exists.
Ambiguity & Expertise
Informational influence is strongest when:
- The situation is ambiguous — no clear correct answer exists
- The task is difficult — you lack confidence in your own judgment
- Others are perceived as experts — they seem more knowledgeable than you
- The situation is a crisis — time pressure prevents independent analysis
In contrast, informational influence is weakest when the correct answer is obvious (as in Asch's line study), when you have relevant expertise, or when you've had time to form an independent judgment before encountering the group's position.
The Asch Conformity Experiment (1951)
While Sherif demonstrated conformity in ambiguous situations, Solomon Asch wanted to push the question further: Would people conform even when the correct answer is obvious? His elegant experiment became one of the most famous and frequently replicated studies in all of psychology.
Procedure & Results
Asch's Line Judgment Study — Denying Your Own Eyes
The Setup: Male college students at Swarthmore College were told they were participating in a "vision test." Each participant sat in a room with 7 confederates (who they believed were fellow participants). The experimenter showed two cards: a standard line and three comparison lines (A, B, C). The task was simple — announce which comparison line matched the standard. The correct answer was always obvious.
The Manipulation: On 12 of 18 trials (called "critical trials"), all 7 confederates unanimously gave the same wrong answer before the real participant responded. The participant was always seated second-to-last, so they heard 6-7 wrong answers before their turn.
Key Results:
- 75% of participants conformed at least once across the 12 critical trials
- The overall conformity rate was 37% of all critical trial responses
- Only 25% of participants never conformed on any trial
- In the control condition (no confederates), the error rate was less than 1%
Post-Experiment Interviews: Most conforming participants reported knowing the group was wrong. They conformed to avoid appearing foolish, different, or defective — classic normative influence. A minority reported genuinely doubting their own perception — informational influence. Some developed a "compromise" strategy, giving the wrong answer on some trials but asserting independence on others.
Factors That Increase or Decrease Conformity
Asch conducted numerous variations of his original experiment to identify the conditions that strengthen or weaken conformity:

Obedience to Authority
While conformity involves implicit pressure from peers, obedience involves explicit commands from an authority figure. The distinction is crucial: in conformity, the group doesn't directly ask you to change; in obedience, someone with perceived authority explicitly tells you what to do. Stanley Milgram's obedience experiments remain the most powerful — and disturbing — demonstration of authority's power over individual behavior.
Milgram's Obedience Experiment (1963)
Milgram's Obedience Study — The Banality of Evil
Context: Milgram designed this study to answer a question raised by the Holocaust: Were the Nazis uniquely evil, or could ordinary people be led to harm others by legitimate authority? His experiment, conducted at Yale University, recruited 40 men aged 20-50 from all walks of life through newspaper advertisements.
The Setup: Each participant was paired with a confederate through a rigged drawing. The real participant was always assigned as "teacher," the confederate as "learner." The learner was strapped into a chair with electrodes attached (visible to the teacher). The teacher sat before a shock generator with 30 switches labeled from 15 volts ("Slight Shock") to 450 volts ("XXX").
The Task: The teacher read word pairs, and the learner had to recall them. For every wrong answer, the teacher was instructed to deliver an increasing shock. The learner (confederate) followed a scripted response pattern:
- 75V: Grunts of discomfort
- 120V: Shouts that the shocks are painful
- 150V: Demands to be released from the experiment
- 270V: Agonized screams
- 300V: Refuses to answer, pounds on wall
- 330V+: Complete silence (suggesting incapacitation or worse)
When participants hesitated or objected, the experimenter — a stern man in a gray lab coat — delivered a sequence of prods: "Please continue," "The experiment requires that you continue," "It is absolutely essential that you continue," "You have no other choice, you must go on."
Predictions: Before the study, Milgram surveyed psychiatrists, graduate students, and middle-class adults. They unanimously predicted that only 1-3% (pathological sadists) would administer the maximum 450V shock.
Actual Results: 65% of participants (26 out of 40) administered the full 450-volt shock. Every single participant went to at least 300 volts. Many participants showed extreme distress — sweating, trembling, stuttering, nervous laughter, biting their lips — yet continued when told to do so.
Key Variations & What They Reveal
Milgram conducted 18 variations of his baseline experiment, systematically manipulating different factors. These variations revealed which situational elements drive obedience:

Factors Affecting Conformity & Obedience
Beyond the specific variables manipulated in Asch's and Milgram's experiments, a broad set of situational, cultural, and individual factors moderate how much people conform or obey:
Situational Factors
- Group size: Conformity increases with group size up to approximately 4-5 members, then levels off. Extremely large majorities can actually decrease conformity if they seem contrived or "ganging up."
- Unanimity: A single dissenter breaks the spell. In both Asch's and Milgram's studies, the presence of a defiant ally was the most powerful factor reducing conformity/obedience.
- Anonymity: When responses are private or anonymous, conformity drops dramatically. This is why secret ballots protect democratic freedoms.
- Status and expertise: We conform more to high-status or expert groups. A panel of doctors influences health beliefs more than a panel of strangers.
- Task importance: Paradoxically, people sometimes conform more on important tasks (stakes are higher, being wrong is costly) but also sometimes less (they invest more effort in independent judgment).
Individual & Cultural Factors
- Culture: Collectivist cultures (Japan, China, Brazil) show higher conformity rates than individualist cultures (USA, UK, Australia). Bond and Smith's 1996 meta-analysis of 133 Asch-type studies across 17 countries confirmed this pattern.
- Gender: Early research suggested women conform more than men, but Eagly and Carli (1981) showed this was largely due to male researchers using male-oriented topics. When topics are gender-neutral or female-oriented, gender differences disappear or reverse.
- Personality: People high in need for uniqueness, self-confidence, and internal locus of control conform less. However, personality effects are typically smaller than situational effects — consistent with social psychology's emphasis on the power of situations.
- Prior commitment: Once you've publicly stated a position, you resist conformity pressure (consistency motivation). This is why totalitarian regimes demand public pledges of allegiance — it binds people to the group through their own statements.
When People Resist
While conformity and obedience research paints a sobering picture of human susceptibility to social pressure, it's equally important to understand when and why people resist. In every conformity study, some participants maintain their independence. In every obedience study, some refuse to continue. What enables resistance?
Minority Influence
Serge Moscovici (1969) challenged the assumption that influence always flows from majority to minority. His blue-green slide experiments demonstrated that a consistent minority can gradually shift the majority's position — not through compliance, but through genuine conversion.
In Moscovici's study, groups of 6 (4 real participants + 2 confederates) judged the color of blue slides. When the two confederates consistently called them "green," about 8% of majority members' responses shifted to "green" — and crucially, private color judgments (measured afterward) showed even greater influence. The minority had changed how people actually perceived the color.
Conditions for effective minority influence:
- Consistency: The minority must maintain its position across time and situations
- Confidence: The minority must appear certain and committed
- Flexibility: Rigid minorities are dismissed; flexible ones that accommodate reasonable points gain credibility
- Identification: Minorities from the in-group are more influential than out-group minorities
Reactance Theory (Brehm, 1966)
Jack Brehm's psychological reactance theory proposes that when people perceive their freedom is being threatened or restricted, they experience an unpleasant motivational state (reactance) that drives them to restore that freedom — often by doing the opposite of what they're told.
Reactance is most likely when:
- The freedom threatened is important to the person
- The threat to freedom is strong and obvious
- The person has previously exercised the freedom
- The restriction seems arbitrary or illegitimate
Whistleblowing & Factors Promoting Independence
Whistleblowers — individuals who expose wrongdoing within organizations despite enormous personal cost — represent the most dramatic form of resistance to group and authority pressure. Research on whistleblowers reveals common characteristics:
- Strong moral identity: They see morality as central to who they are
- High internal locus of control: They believe their actions can make a difference
- Social support: Even one ally or sympathetic ear increases likelihood of speaking out
- Knowledge of precedent: Knowing that others have successfully resisted provides a behavioral template
- Awareness of influence tactics: Understanding how obedience and conformity work provides psychological inoculation against them
The Stanford Prison Experiment (1971)
Philip Zimbardo's Stanford Prison Experiment (SPE) sits at the intersection of conformity, obedience, and role internalization. It demonstrated how rapidly normal individuals can be transformed by the power of social roles and institutional structures — but it also raises profound questions about research ethics and scientific methodology.
Overview & Findings
The Stanford Prison Experiment — Power of Situations & Roles
The Setup: Zimbardo recruited 24 psychologically healthy, middle-class male college students and randomly assigned them as "guards" or "prisoners" in a mock prison constructed in Stanford's psychology basement. The planned duration was two weeks.
The Situation: Prisoners were "arrested" by real police, booked, blindfolded, stripped, deloused, given smocks with ID numbers, and had chains placed on their ankles. Guards wore khaki uniforms, mirrored sunglasses (to prevent eye contact), and carried batons. They received minimal instructions beyond maintaining order.
What Happened:
- Day 1-2: Prisoners staged a rebellion; guards crushed it using fire extinguishers and solitary confinement
- Day 2-3: Guards became increasingly sadistic — waking prisoners for counts at 2 AM, denying bathroom access, forcing degrading exercises
- Day 3-4: One prisoner had an emotional breakdown and was released; others became passive, depressed, and compliant
- Day 5-6: A visiting researcher (Christina Maslach) expressed horror at the conditions — she was the only one of 50+ observers to object
The study was terminated after 6 days — less than half the planned duration.
Key Insights: The SPE suggested that social roles and institutional power can override individual personality and moral values. Modern Reappraisals & Criticisms
In recent decades, the SPE has faced mounting criticism that complicates its original conclusions:
- Demand characteristics: Recordings revealed Zimbardo actively encouraged guard aggression ("You can create in the prisoners feelings of boredom, fear, arbitrariness...")
- Selection bias: Le Texier (2019) showed that the ad recruited for "a psychological study of prison life" — potentially attracting participants interested in dominance
- Small sample: Only ~6 guards showed extreme cruelty; the rest were passive or tried to be fair
- Failed replications: The BBC Prison Study (Reicher & Haslam, 2006) found that guards did NOT automatically become abusive — leadership and identity were key moderators

Contemporary view: Most social psychologists today treat the SPE as a powerful demonstration rather than rigorous science. It illustrates important principles about roles, power, and institutions — but its specific claims about automatic role absorption should be interpreted cautiously. The lesson may be less "situations automatically corrupt" and more "certain situations, combined with leadership cues and gradual escalation, can corrupt."
Real-World Applications
Conformity and obedience are not merely laboratory curiosities — they shape human behavior in contexts ranging from everyday social life to the most extreme historical atrocities. Understanding these principles helps explain phenomena that might otherwise seem incomprehensible.
Cults & Military Obedience
Cult recruitment exploits every principle we've discussed. New recruits are isolated from outside social support (removing allies), placed in unanimous groups of believers (normative pressure), subjected to information control (making the group the only source of "truth"), and gradually escalated through increasingly extreme commitments (foot-in-the-door). The leader occupies an unquestionable authority position, and defectors are severely punished — making the cost of resistance catastrophically high.
Military obedience similarly relies on structured authority, uniform wearing (deindividuation), gradual training escalation, institutional prestige, and severe consequences for disobedience. However, modern military ethics training explicitly teaches soldiers to disobey unlawful orders — a direct application of Milgram's findings that awareness and clear ethical boundaries can override blind obedience.
Workplace & Social Media
Workplace conformity manifests as groupthink in meetings (silence equals agreement), dress codes, communication styles, and the suppression of dissenting opinions. Toxic workplace cultures persist because normative pressure makes speaking up socially costly — the same dynamic Asch demonstrated with strangers becomes even more powerful when your career depends on the group's approval.
Social media echo chambers represent a modern form of informational and normative conformity. Algorithms curate content that confirms existing beliefs (informational influence), while likes, shares, and follower counts create normative pressure to adopt popular positions. The "pile-on" dynamics of social media — where dissenting voices are drowned out by unanimous opposition — mirror Asch's unanimity effect at massive scale.
