Experimental design is the backbone of social psychology. Operational Definitions
One of the most challenging aspects of social psychology research is translating abstract constructs into concrete, measurable operations. An operational definition specifies exactly how a concept will be manipulated (for IVs) or measured (for DVs) in a particular study.

Research Methods Overview
Social psychologists draw on a diverse toolkit of methods, each with distinct strengths and limitations. The choice of method depends on the research question, ethical constraints, and the desired balance between internal and external validity.
Experimental Methods
Laboratory experiments remain the gold standard for establishing causation. Participants come to a controlled setting where the researcher manipulates one or more variables while holding everything else constant. Classic examples include Milgram's obedience studies, Asch's conformity paradigm, and Festinger's cognitive dissonance experiments.
Field experiments take the experimental method into natural settings. Participants are typically unaware they are being studied, which maximizes ecological validity. Latané and Darley's bystander intervention studies — conducted in subway cars and on streets — are exemplars of this approach. The trade-off is reduced control over confounding variables.
Online experiments have become increasingly popular, particularly through platforms like Prolific and MTurk. They offer large, diverse samples at low cost but raise questions about attention, environmental control, and the validity of social manipulations conducted through a screen.
Non-Experimental Methods
- Correlational studies: Measure two or more variables and assess the relationship between them. Cannot establish causation but can test predictions, identify patterns, and measure naturally occurring variables that cannot be ethically manipulated.
- Surveys: Administer standardized questionnaires to large samples. Excellent for measuring attitudes, beliefs, and self-reported behavior across populations. Vulnerable to social desirability bias.
- Longitudinal studies: Follow the same participants over time, measuring variables at multiple points. Critical for understanding developmental trajectories and temporal ordering of variables.
- Cross-sectional studies: Measure variables at a single time point across groups that differ on a dimension of interest (e.g., different age groups). Faster and cheaper than longitudinal but cannot distinguish age effects from cohort effects.
- Case studies: In-depth qualitative analysis of a single individual, event, or group. Useful for generating hypotheses and documenting rare phenomena but cannot establish generalizability.
Meta-Analysis
A meta-analysis is a statistical technique that combines results from multiple studies on the same topic to estimate the overall effect size. By aggregating data across dozens or hundreds of studies, meta-analyses provide the most reliable estimates of effect sizes and can identify moderating variables that explain why effects vary across studies.
Measurement in Social Psychology
How we measure psychological constructs determines the quality and interpretability of our data. Social psychology employs a rich array of measurement techniques, from direct self-report to subtle implicit measures that bypass conscious awareness.
Self-Report Measures
Self-report remains the most common measurement tool in social psychology. Participants directly report their attitudes, beliefs, emotions, or behavioral intentions through questionnaires and scales.
Common scale types:
- Likert scales: Participants rate agreement on a scale (e.g., 1 = Strongly Disagree to 7 = Strongly Agree)
- Semantic differential: Participants rate a concept between bipolar adjectives (e.g., Good—Bad, Warm—Cold)

Threats to self-report validity: Social desirability bias (presenting oneself favorably), demand characteristics (guessing the hypothesis), acquiescence bias (tendency to agree), and limited introspective access (people may not know their own attitudes).
Implicit Measures
Because people cannot always accurately report their attitudes — especially on sensitive topics like prejudice — social psychologists developed implicit measures that assess attitudes indirectly through reaction times, physiological responses, or behavioral indicators.
The Implicit Association Test (IAT)
How It Works: The IAT measures the strength of automatic associations between concepts (e.g., "Black" vs. "White") and evaluations (e.g., "Good" vs. "Bad") through response latencies. Participants categorize stimuli into paired categories as quickly as possible. The logic: if two concepts are strongly associated in memory, pairing them should be easy (fast responses); if weakly associated, pairing them should be difficult (slow responses).
Interpretation: A participant who responds faster when "White + Good" are paired than when "Black + Good" are paired shows an implicit preference for White over Black faces — regardless of their explicit attitudes.
Controversies: The IAT's test-retest reliability is moderate (~0.50), its predictive validity for discriminatory behavior is debated, and critics argue it may measure cultural knowledge rather than personal attitudes. Despite these limitations, it remains the most widely used implicit measure in social psychology.
Other implicit measures include: affective priming (evaluative facilitation), physiological measures (skin conductance, fMRI), behavioral indicators (seating distance, eye contact duration), and linguistic analysis (word choice in free responses).
Reliability & Validity
All measures must demonstrate acceptable levels of both reliability and validity:

Effect Sizes & Power Analysis
A p-value tells us whether an effect is statistically significant (convention: p < .05), but it does not tell us how large or important the effect is. That's the role of effect sizes:
- Cohen's d: Standardized mean difference. Small = 0.2, Medium = 0.5, Large = 0.8
- Pearson's r: Correlation coefficient. Small = .10, Medium = .30, Large = .50
- η² (eta-squared): Proportion of variance explained by the IV in ANOVA. Small = .01, Medium = .06, Large = .14
Power analysis determines how many participants you need to detect an effect of a given size with reasonable probability (convention: 80% power). The replication crisis revealed that many classic studies were severely underpowered — they had less than 50% probability of detecting the effects they claimed to find, suggesting many "significant" results were false positives.
The Replication Crisis
Beginning around 2011, social psychology faced a reckoning. High-profile findings began failing to replicate, fraud cases emerged, and methodological critiques revealed systemic problems in how research was conducted and published. The Open Science Movement
The crisis catalyzed a sweeping reform movement that has made social psychology more transparent, rigorous, and self-correcting than ever before:

Ethical Research Conduct
Research ethics in social psychology reflect hard-won lessons from controversial studies that caused real harm to participants. Modern ethical standards balance the pursuit of knowledge against the protection of human dignity, autonomy, and well-being.
The IRB Process
In the United States, all research involving human participants must be reviewed and approved by an Institutional Review Board (IRB) before data collection begins. The IRB evaluates:
